The body of a newborn girl was found by two boys playing near 7 Harmony Lane in Mendham Township on Christmas Eve in 1984, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

The newborn’s death was ruled a homicide, and she was adopted by the police department with help from Chaplain Father Mike Drury, named Baby Mary and given a proper burial at St. Joe's in the borough.

“Every Christmas Eve at 12 Noon, officers from the MTPD do a small grave side service along with other members of the community in her memory so she is not forgotten,” the Mendham Township Police Department said.

The officers also remember Baby Hope, who was found abandoned on Route 78 just a few years later and buried in the same cemetery.

“Both cases sadly remain open to this day,” the department said.
